K-Tong in Palmerston

K-Tong has been in Palmerston for a few years and has a fairly good reputation.

This night K-Tong was a big disappointment. To be honest, I'd eaten there previously and had really enjoyed the meals. But this night they just couldn't get it right.

Service - they certainly weren't falling over us, it was as if our table had the plague and they were warned to keep their distance.

When the final ladies arrived and sat down we waited and waited and waited for service. Finally we called a waiter over and asked for glasses and water.

The young lady taking our meal orders seemed confused and perhaps didn't understand English that well, she had great difficulty understanding that she needed to write up two of the meals as separate orders. Eight ladies at the table. Six ladies ordered meals to be shared. Two ladies ordered separately.

The shared meals came out far too slowly with not enough on the plate. Sitting around for quite some time waiting in between dishes. One of the dishes we believe they forgot all together as the waitress started clearing away peoples' plates before the final dish was served. At that stage one of the ladies, who was rather upset, told the waitress to "forget the final dish, it's too late now, we don't want it!"

Now as for the two ladies that had ordered separately. One ordered Laksa, a soup dish. Her meal was the first one served. The other lady waited, waited, waited and waited, quite patiently, until such time that she was completely starving and feeling a little left out so inquired as to where her meal was. Ten minutes later a rather haphazardly slapped together dish was served. It looked like they were trying to make up for their mistake and cooked two pieces of fish, both crumbed, and had slapped them onto a plate on top of each other. Quite bizarre.

Paying the bill - oh no, one of those restaurants that does not like people paying separately. How hard is it to use a calculator and work out what each person pays?

Overall the experience was quite disappointing. Service was poor. Food not as good as previously experienced. And we were made to feel like aliens because we wanted to pay separately.

  1. I've had some good meals here and some not so good, this was one of the worst, both the meal and the (non-existent) service. I was totally put off the restaurant and won't be in a hurry to go back!!

  2. These people really are adverse to splitting bills. They need to advertise that they won't do it. K-T used to have big, generous serves of their rice dishes; now it's a lettuce leaf and a few thin slices of orange filling up half the plate with an adequate serve of rice on the other half piled up to look more. Quantity has gone down but the prices up. Surely with waitresses that wipe left over food from the tables onto the floor and serve saucers full of spilt coffee they should be looking to do things to make you want to return ie. give you bigger serves. It's certainly not the quality place it used to be.

  3. I've found the girl on the register (I think she might be the Manager)to be quite rude. A shame as it leaves a lasting impression when she's the last person you deal with before leaving. I agree that both the quality and the quantity of the dishes has decreased over time.

  4. This used to be a family favourite of ours but reduced serves and increased prices have now conspired against us.
I was with a party of eight. We all ordered together but my meal came out first followed at least 15 minutes later by another main with the rest appearing sporadically. This was a shame as it rteally detracted from the 'shared meal' experience.
The waitress serving us was befuddled by the large order so it took some time to get the order settled. When we asked to order and pay in groups she was so confused that she brought the manager to the table. This woman was abrupt and rude and certainly did little for the reputation of hospitality at the restaurant.
Although I enjoyed my meal I felt sorry for the others who had to wait quite some time for their meals and drinks. One meal was so late in comming that it was cancelled.
This used to be such a terrific restaurant with generous, affordable serves. What happened?
PS. Note to wait staff - Don't brush rice and other food crumbs onto the floor for others to stand on. Yuk!

  5. very similar experience .... 90 minutes till first food arrived, couldn't even catch a wait staff's eye contact, finally grabbed one and asked for drink refills and was told to just hold your horses - I'll serve you when I get time! 20 minutes later we got out drinks. just terrible service

  6. Went for a family dinner; there were 10 of us. We ordered a total of 10 dishes. The favourites were the Special Fried Rice, Sweet & Sour Pork and the Pad Thai. Unfortunately the Green Chicken Curry was a disappointment with the sauce being far too 'watery'.
We wrote down the dishes we ordered and tried to give this list to the waitress who insisted that we read it out instead. This led to much confusion on her part and made the ordering process a real chore. The restaurant wasn't overly busy but the drink service was very slow.
We spent quite a lot of money on the night for fairly ordinary service and didn't even get a friendly 'thank you' or 'good night' at the register.

  8. Went to K-Tong with a group of friends. I had the Chicken Laksa and we shared some dishes. All the fried entrees we had were very oily but the steamed dim sims were nice. We ordered a sizzling dish which didn’t sizzle because the plate wasn’t hot enough but the waitress wouldn’t redo it. The King Prawn dish was good. Some dishes had too many veges and not enough meat.
